What is a cyclorama and where does it come from?
The cyclorama originates from theater, a curved backdrop that eliminates visible corners and creates the impression of infinite space. In studio photography, a cyclorama is the curved transition between floor and wall that allows avoiding shadows and creating a clean, borderless background. The first photo studios with cycloramas appeared in Hollywood in the 1950s, when advertising productions required clean, infinite backgrounds for fashion sessions and press campaigns. Today a cyclorama is the standard of every professional photography studio, but cyclorama size and available distance vary dramatically between studios. It's precisely this distance, the space between the subject and the background, that determines the studio's artistic possibilities.
The physics of distance, why 10 meters makes a difference
The physics of optics is uncompromising here: the distance between subject and background directly influences several key technical parameters of the image.
Perspective compression with long focal lengths
Photographing with an 85mm lens from 3 meters gives you a certain effect. Photographing the same subject with a 135mm or 200mm lens from 6-10 meters gives you dramatically different facial proportions, different relationships between frame elements and the characteristic compression prized in fashion photography. Long focal lengths with large distance from background make facial features look more noble, body proportions are optically better, and the background is beautifully blurred without artificial post-production.
Separation from the background
Even at f/8 aperture, standard for product and portrait photography, a model standing 8 meters from the background will be clearly separated from it. The cyclorama background naturally loses sharpness proportionally to distance. This effect is impossible to achieve in a studio 4-5 meters deep, where the model is forced to stand close to the background, which remains unpleasantly sharp.
Minimal shadow
Every flash casts a shadow on the background proportional to the distance between the subject and the background. A model standing 2 meters from the wall will always cast a visible shadow, requiring background fill lighting or post-production removal. A model standing 8-10 meters from the cyclorama casts a shadow that is invisible or trivial to edit. This saves retouching time and delivers a cleaner, more professional look.

How to plan a cyclorama session?
Lens selection
For fashion sessions at SPOT we recommend: 85mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 for portraits and half-body, classic fashion lens, perfect compression, natural bokeh. 135mm f/2 for full-length figures with 6-8 meters of distance, elegant compression, beautiful body proportions. 70-200mm f/2.8 for flexibility, you can dynamically change focal length and test different compositions. Wide angles (24-50mm) reserve for group shots or environmental images where you want to show the studio space.
Light setup
When working with a cyclorama, separating the subject lighting from the background lighting is key. The main light (key light) is positioned at a 45-degree angle to the model, typically with a beauty dish or a 60x90cm softbox. The fill light with a reflector or smaller softbox on the other side reduces shadows without eliminating them. Two or four lights aimed at the background, positioned symmetrically and balanced, ensure even, white background. A rim light from behind and above separates the subject's silhouette from the background, adding three-dimensionality.
