Professional models know that 80% of a session's success depends on preparation, not talent or luck. Sleep, hydration, wardrobe selection and mental attitude are the foundation that separates an average session from an exceptional one. Here is the comprehensive preparation guide that professionals follow.
Why preparation matters more than talent
Photographers and directors unanimously confirm: an unprepared model or talent wastes 30-50% of session time on corrections, fixes and waiting. Tired eyes, facial puffiness, feeling unwell or wrong wardrobe are problems that no makeup artist or retoucher can fully correct. Conversely, a model who arrives rested, with a considered wardrobe and mental preparation, is ready from the first shot, giving the photographer space for creative experimentation instead of firefighting.
External preparation, body and appearance
External preparations start a week before the session and directly impact how the camera captures your appearance.
One week before the session
Hydration is fundamental: face and body skin looks best when hydrated from within. Start drinking 2-3 liters of water daily a week before the session. Reducing alcohol and sodium (heavily salted foods) dramatically decreases facial puffiness. Sleep, minimum 7-8 hours over the last 3-4 nights before the session, eliminates dark circles and dull skin that no concealer handles perfectly. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds 2 weeks before the session, uneven tan or sunburn is difficult to even out.
The day before the session
Don't experiment with new makeup, new skincare or a new hairdresser, the day before the session is not the time for experiments. Moisturize your face in the evening with a good moisturizing cream, skin will look better in the morning. Prepare your wardrobe and check every piece: are they washed, ironed, are buttons intact, do zippers work. Charge your phone and check the route to the studio, being late builds stress that shows in photos.
Wardrobe selection
Avoid the moire effect, fine check patterns, closely spaced stripes, tightly-woven tweed can cause moire on digital photos: an irritating interference pattern. Always test an outfit by taking a photo with your phone. Colors for skin tone: people with fair complexions typically photograph well in deep, saturated colors, navy, burgundy, deep green. Olive and dark complexions look great in white, beige and cream. Prepare at least 3-4 outfits, different moods, different applications for the resulting photos.
Internal preparation, mental attitude
The best wardrobe and perfect makeup won't help if you're tense or unsure of yourself during the session. Mental preparation is an equally important part of the process.
- References and inspiration, collect on Pinterest or in a phone folder 10-15 photos of portraits, poses and outfits you respond to; show them to the photographer before the session
- Mirror exercises, try 5-10 body positions and facial expressions in front of a mirror; take photos with your phone to know what works for you
- Mental rest, the day before the session avoid stressful situations and difficult conversations; emotional state shows in photos
- Positive attitude, even if you don't like being photographed, treat the session as play and experiment; the photographer will guide you through the whole process
